The hamlet of Rio Marina - Municipality of Rio is located on the eastern side of the island of Elba, gently set in a small sea inlet surrounded by hills whose earth, red due to iron oxide, testifies to its rich mining past. In this area of ​​the island, the extraction of iron from mines has taken place since the times of the ancient Etruscans and was, together with the navy, the main activity of the inhabitants until a few decades ago.

Currently, Rio's mining past has once again become an important attraction for island tourism, so much so that the stretch of coast that goes from Rio Marina to Cavo, has been called the "Costa that shines", in honor of that almost dreamlike sparkle of the black mining dust present on some beaches and which distinguishes its appearance. From the port there are efficient connections with the mainland - as an alternative to Portoferraio - and there is also the port of Cavo for connections with Portoferraio and Piombino.
