The small village serves as a watershed towards the towns of Modena that are already affected by the influence of Tuscany. His dialect, in fact, and many of its traditions refer to this side of the Apennines. Dominated to the south by the ridge on which the summit of Mount Cimone emerges, its territory ranges from an altitude ranging from 620 to 2165 m asl and is completed by the towns of Castello, Groppo, Serpiano, Castellino di Brocco, Le Polle.

In ancient times, the main center was Castello, where the famous and notorious Obizzo da Montegarullo, a condottiere and a man of arms of 400, seems to have often lived.
